Full Description

Westwood Green is shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, located to the west of the settlement of Great Horkesley. The green is shown to be a thin linear shape aligned NE-SW following London Road and widening into a wedge-like shape at the southern end, with the junction of Coach Road. It has an area of c.5.5ha. The map shows buildings on the edge of the green, on the east (Spring Farm) and west (Westwood House) sides. Westwood House is a Grade II* listed C17 red brick mansion (LB Number: 1267009). There are two Grade II listed buildings at Spring House, including the C16 main building (LB Number: 1222774). The green does not appear on a later maps, so it must have been removed or developed over at some point before 1874. It seems that the land has been absorbed into the Westwood Park boundary, therefore removing its status as a green and making it a garden.<1>
