Full Description

Bergholt Heath is originally shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, located where the settlement of West Bergholt is now. The heath is shown on this map to be an irregular shape, with an area of 136.4ha. The map shows a number of buildings on the edge of the heath, including some listed buildings. These include the Grade II listed C17 barn to the northwest of Hill House (LB Number: 1225087), the Grade II listed C18 main building of Truman's Brewery (LB Number: 1225083), the Grade II listed C18 brewery house at Truman's (LB Number: 1225082), the Grade II listed C18 red brick house Scarletts (LB Number: 1266511), the Grade II listed C17 public house The White Hart (LB Number: 1225136), the Grade II listed C17 Virginia Cottage (LB Number: 1266510) and the Grade II listed C17 Bures House (LB Number: 1225135). <1>

Bergholt Heath is then shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887), which shows the heath to be a lot smaller and split into smaller pockets spread over the old area of the heath. It has now shrunk to an area of 11.88ha spread out across the old area. It has lost most of its land to urbanisation and the need for farmland. In modern times the heath seems to have shrunk again, losing the land to the south to modern urbanisation. It name on the Epoch 1 map is actually West Bergholt Heath, to match the parish name change. <2>
