Full Description

Layer de la Haye Common is shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887), located on the northern outskirts of the settlement of Layer de la Haye. The common is roughly oblong in shape, with an area of 3.478ha. There are a number of buildings built along the edge of the common, including two sets of listed buildings. These are the Grade II listed early C19 terrace of cottages on The Common, numbers 29, 31 and 33 (LB Number: 1223843) and the Grade II listed C17 pair of cottages that were once one dwelling located on The Common, numbers 95 and 97 (LB Number: 1267124). The modern common is a similar shape to the Epoch 1 version, except It has lost the northern half to urbanisation, leaving a slightly square common behind with a smaller area of 1.601ha. As previously stated, part of the common has been taken over by urbanisation as the settlement of Layer de la Haye has absorbed the common into its borders. <1>
