Full Description

Smythe's Green is originally shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, located northeast of the historic woodland known as Layer Wood, and is just north of the settlement of Layer Marney. The green is shown on this map to be a triangular shaped green that has an area of 0.5733ha, compared to its later size of 1.613ha. This suggests that the green was once smaller than it is now. The name for the green, as shown on the historic map, is Smythe Green rather than Smythe's Green. <1>

Smythe's Green is then shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887), which shows the green grow in size to 1.613ha in area and change slightly in shape. The green is still very triangular, but has now extended to an area of 1.440ha, and a thin section now extends south, which has an area of 0.1726ha. This map shows that a number of buildings had been built around the edge of the green, including two Grade II listed buildings of the late C17 Forge Cottage (LB Number: 1223974) and the C18 Brick Cottage known as Oak Lea (LB Number: 1267028). The spelling for the green on this map is different again. On this map the green is labelled Smyth's Green. <2>
