An Evaluation carried out as part of the Flakts Wood Project on land at Cuckoo Farm revealed little of archaeological interest. Only two of the crop marks were identified as features below ground level but both of these appeared to be geological anomalies or peri-glacial features. The only archaeological feature's were a late post medieval quarry pit and a small fire pit probably dating from the 19th Century. <5>

During trenching for the Colchester Northern Approach Road one trench (Trench T23) was extended in order to locate a cropmark, part of the group listed as EHER 2644, which is a linear projecting south towards the corner of the field. No corresponding feature was revealed in the trench, however 4 parallel linear features were found in trench's T22 and T23 that are thought to include some of the linear southern projections of the cropmark group.The features displayed similar width, depth and profile and are considered to be modern due to the presence of modern glass in one fill. Trench 27 was dug to try to locate a T-shaped cropmark feature previously plotted in this area. It was found to be a ditch containing a modern cement land-drain. Also in the trench were charcoal-rich pits.<6><7><8>

A single ring-ditch was mapped as part of the NMP update 2010, 27m in diameter.
