Full Description
Redoubt, called `The Fort' locally, built during the siege of Colchester in 1648. During the 1914-18 War it was used as a bombing range.<1><2><3>
The nature of this site is unclear, as the present earthworks do not appear on early editions of OS large scale maps. This suggests a late Victorian construction date. The area is labelled as Drill Ground on OS County Series Series at 1:2500 scale, Epoch 1 – 1874-87, and the earthworks are not shown, although field boundaries on this map do seem to respect it and the boundaries do seem to be arranged partially in a classic Civil War star shape. This might hint at a possible earlier fort on the site. Possibly associated with the seige fort called 'Needham' on the 1648 Siege Map of Colchester?<4><5>
