Full Description
Colchester urns containing cremation remains, a lead coffin containing teeth, fragments of skull, two small earings and another lead coffin with a collection of Samian ware and a lead tube. <1> <2>
A lead coffin found in Sussex Road. Given by Mr William Rodgers in 1880. Found in May of that year. Length 5ft 1", width 13"; depth 10". There are no nail-holes so that it appears to have lined the interior of a wooden coffin. The lid is decorated along the edges with a small bead-row and lines of the same pattern divide the top into rhomboid sompartments. Of the skeleton only parts of the skull and some teeth remained, apparently of a female of about 18 years of age. The were two small earrings of plain gold wire. O.A.B 1880 and COLEM 1897.358 , PC988. - Colchester UAD Sources and further reading - Unpublished document: Hull, M. Rex. Unknown. Inventory of Grave Groups. No348. <2>
