Full Description

Roman pottery found on beach in 1949. <1> Briquetage has also been found here, which is now in County Hall. <2>
In March 1995 Roman pottery was found on the beach by Robert Lee (NGR TM01541230). Also found by Robert Lee, Kath Evans and James Fawn was briquetage, fragments of vessels, firebars and pedestals. In a scatter abount 11m in diameter were clumps of red earth less than 100mm thick. The diffuseness of the scatter suggests that it is not a red hill but originates from one nearby. The area is regularly dug over by bait gatherers, but the appearance of the material seems to have been due to recent high tides which have scoured the beach. Carl Crossan describes two fragments of decorated ware as Flavian and a third fragment as Roman but not closely datable. <3>
