Full Description
Irregular moat adjoining St Edmunds Church and East Mersea Hall, to the east of the church. The plan is incomplete; the north and east, curving side is relatively complete, terminating in a circular-shaped pond to the south-east of the Hall. The western side of the moat, along the east side of Church Lane, is depicted on the 1837 Tithe Map and also on the The County Series at 1:2500 scale Epoch 1a (1874-87), up to the 1955-58 1:10k, defining the west side of the graveyard. The southern arm of the moat (assuming there was one) does not appear on any of the early maps.
Possibly connected to earthworks around church and hall, a Danish camp/DMV? <1><2><3>
Incomplete, irregular moat. Sketch plan on back MSRG card.<4>
