Full Description

Roman pottery, tile and metalwork. Pottery included: Samian (200 sherds and fragments, some burnt, of various forms), 49 fine ware sherds including Rhenish ware beaker sherds, Nene Valley or imported colour-coat sherds, miscellaneous colour coat sherds, Hadham oxidised ware sherds, 5 amphora sherds, 2 mortaria sherds, 131 coarse ware sherds. Tile included a box flue tile and a flat tile tile. The original bag apparently contained corroded iron fragments and one piece of lead, also a tag marked "misc. iron fragments. Colchester NE CNR ditch 149.001 256", an envelope marked "lead fragments from Colchester. From Roman period debris in Everetts Brickyard and NE corner rampart 149.001 256". Contents of bag were a small, flat piece of lead with one hole, iron fragments including nails, part of a carpenter's dog, a ring-headed pin, part of a strap end, a folded piece (possibly from a vessel?), marking waste lumps. "Presumably, the tag related to the iron and the envelope to the lead, in which case, some of the lead fragments are now missing". <1>
