Full Description
A wheel-thrown, imported carinated pot was found at Old Heath near Colchester. The date and circumstances of the discovery are unknown. Evison reports that the pot probably dates to the 5th to 7th centuries. The fabric is reddish-buff with a blackened and burnished surface; the rim is missing. The upper part is decorated by grooves. The form is a tall, slender biconical vase - comparable forms have been found at Hantes Wiheries, Belgium, grave 30, Beerlegum and Emelgem. It is thought the Old Heath pot would have been imported from Belgium or north-western France. Similar pots come from the 6th to 7th century cemetery at Prittlewell, Southend.<1>
