Full Description
Watching brief during underpinning of new houses. Workmen digging along the N and E walls of 9 and 10 discovered a number of Roman vessels forming part of a Roman cremation cemetery. Most of the pots were represented only by fragments; the ground had probably been extensively disturbed in the past. Several pots were upright and in situ and indicate either unusually deep accumulation of topsoil or that the cremations had been dug into earlier soil filled features such as a sand or gravel pit. Three pots contained human remains. It was not possible to determined which pots if any formed grave groups. All the pots were given to the Colchester and Essex Museum. From the sherds it was possible to identify at least 11 vessels that had been buried complete (descriptions in this source). <1>
