Full Description

Construction of houses in the garden of St Mary's Cottage. W half of the site occupied mainly by topsoil and redeposited Roman material. Of note was a scatter of human bone, mainly in the W half of the site, and 2 tile-lined graves partly exposed at the base of one of the trenches. The graves had been lined with Roman tile or brick set on edge. They belong to the same group of rubble lined graves as found by Mr B Blake in 1962-3 whilst excavating in the garden of St Mary's Cottage and on the adjacent site of Embassy Suite (unpublished). Also identical in character to graves found in the grounds of St John's Abbey. These were C12. The graves at St Mary's presumably belong to the early phase of the cemetery of St Mary's church. <1>
