Full Description

Watching brief during construction of office development. Many stanchion holes cut through remains of a Roman house - foundations of the building comprised trenches filled with septaria and mortar. Other remains were noted S of the building, eg, mosaics found in the 1880's to the SE (see ) There is also a record of a black and white pavement found in 1927 in Orfeurs yard, 100ft back from the street frontage. The site of the yard is obscure and the 1927 find is probably the 1880's find rediscovered. The alignment and position of the house noted in 1976 suggests a Roman street to the E on which the building fronted. The alignment suggests that the atreet led from a crossing point over the R.Colne a short distance to the E of the site of the present North Bridge. <1>
