Full Description

Roman town of Colchester - second E-W street from the N. In 1930 an extension was built onto the S side of St Martin's House. A deep trench revealed a section of Roman street running E-W but c.40ft S of the expected line. Three distinct road surfaces, and several repairs. In the lowest road metal a coin of Nero was found. Details of the street and section in this source. NGR - TL 99542529. <1> Second location where this street has been certainly encountered is in the garden behind nos. 4 and 5 North Hill (TL 99242540) when an air raid shelter was made there in June 1940. The work was executed in great haste. The line of the street ran c.40ft N of that seen in 1930 at St Martin's House. The site was excavated to a depth of 8ft and scarcely anywhere did the excavation extend beyond the limits of the metalling - both sides of which appear to have been uncovered although their accurate plotting was rendered impossible by the many mutilations they had suffered. The roadway was made up of a thick bed of yellow gravel tightly packed. From below the road metal (but not necessarily sealed by it) came pottery of mid C1 date. A number of coins were stated to have been found in the road metal - an as of Claudius, 3 pre-Neronian second brass, denarius of M.Anthony, 2 second brass of Nero and one of Vespasian. Along the S side of the street lay a litter of building rubble and in it a number of coins, eg, of Constantine I. In the later Roman period a large pit had been cut so that its base passed through the roadway which was by then therefore out of use. A large amount of pottery and small finds were recovered from the excavation - now in Colchester Museum. <1> <2> Over the garden wall in the next premises to the E a section was seen in 1950 but the roadway had been largely removed by later excavations. For the rest of its course this street is uncertain. It was carefully sought at the S end of insula 15 without success. The tower (Hull's site 164) at the Technical College must be close to its W end. The tower on the E wall is sited by Wheeler and Laver to the S and by Cutts to the N of this street. <1> Other refs. <3> <4>
