Full Description

The fifth N-S street from the W of the walled town of Roman Colchester. Only seen once , lying by the side of a large red tessellated pavement that lies in the SW angle of insula 6. Southwards it fits in with the observed NW angle of the forum block where it must have been dug away by the Norman ditch of the castle; a vaulted drain which must have run either under the road pr by the side of it shows a broken end in a bank in the park. On the S side of the High Street there is no evidence. The continuation of the line should run down Lon Wire Street but "this is quite impossible for remains of buildings and none of roadway have been found all along this street". Excavations in the arcade did not expose signs of a N-S street E of Wire Street. Possibly the street may have run by the heavy wall noted in insula 29 (13045) "but its course is beset with remains of pavements, unless it has side-stepped to the west". <1>
