Full Description

Roman Colchester - third N-S street from the W. This has only been seen at one point on two occasions. A trench for a cable, cut to no great depth, in the pavement on the S side of Culver Street due N of the nave of Trinity CHurch, was cut through the strong gravel metalling of the Roman street. The surface was of large pebbles and the width observed 18-20ft but a deeper excavation would probably have indicated a greater wideth due to the camber. Some years later the opposite pavement was similarly cut and gravel metalling again observed but not in as good condition. The general line of the street well confirmed by the general town plan and the presence of either a tower or gate at Scheregate. <1>
