Full Description

In February 1948 a shaft 8ft E-W by 6.5ft N-S was dug in the NW corner of the motor transport yard of the Police Station. The trench of a wall 2dt wide ran N-S, its base 7ft from the modern tarmac surface. On its W side was a room paved with red tesserae on a poor base of yellowish mortar. There was a second pavement to the E of the wall of which 3" good white mortar remained and which probably supported a better pavement , possibly decorated, but no tesserae were found. The pavements had been broken by post-Roman excavations of varying depth. Beneath the pavement was only yellow loam with no stratification and no artefacts other than a small sherd of buff ware. <1>
