Full Description

In December 1929 a shaft was sunk at each end of the front of the shop next but one S of the arcade on each side of Wire Street. At about 2.5ft from the surfacein the S lay a red tessellated pavement with a layer of charcoal less than 1" thick lying upon it; above was clay, presumably from the walls of the building. On this was an old rubble wall. The bed of the Roman pavement was 4" thick and lay on a bed of clay, its full depth not known. In the northern shaft the pavement was missing although the charcoal layer was still there and in the clay above was a second brass of Trajan in good condition. The rim of a large jar f.272 was found upright in the ground under the next house N. <1>
