Full Description
Wheeler and Laver record a pavement or paved way W of Queen Street, opposite no.27 and refer to TEAS OS v.5 and the OS 1:500 map which do not tally. The former is Wire's record of 1848 in which he notes a visit to the sewerage works, the purchase of samian and a paved way reported by workmen as 3ft below the surface near no.27 (which could be roughly in line with the late Roman street to the W), and higher up a floor of Roman bricks (Hull's site 48) which was broken up. The sewer trench was in the street, therefore these sites should be marked in the street and not W of it. The mark on the OS 1:500 map records a Roman tessellated pavement found behind a house W of Queen Street and just N of the Roman street found in the arcade. This is where Wheeler and Laver place their site 48 whilst site 47 representing the tile floor is put further N but still W of the street. Both 47 and 48 are now resited (?by Hull) and the OS pavement is given the number 47A. <1> - <4> RCHM note site 48 as Roman brick floor found September 1848 about half way up Queen Street and now destroyed, and site 47 as a pavement or paved way found in 1848 W of Queen Street opposite no.27. <5>
