Full Description

In 1927 the GPO cut a trench for cables down Pelham's Lane, Culver Street and Trinity Street enabling a number of new observations to be made. The trench passed through the town wall at right angles on the E side of the steps at Scheregate; here although the cut was shallow it was all in Roman masonry, not less than 14ft thick. <1> In the same operation three shafts were sunk in the street just N of the steps, 2 against the S pavement were negative. The third, in the rounded corner of Trinity Street and Sir Isaac's Walk was deeper and revealed a red tessellated pavement at c.3ft from the surface, and only 30ft back from the inside face of the town wall.
