Full Description

Work done by Mr AF Hall and others at the school in 1937. In the grounds of Gurney Benham House (location marked 113 on Hull's map) remains of furnaces were found over the `camp'ditch' and north of the road a pit full of burnt earth. There were the remains of three flues or furnaces. It was suggested that their purpose was for cremation, grey powder from one flue containing phosphate and calcium supports this view. <1>
