Full Description

Fine pavement with geometric pattern withg large cantharus in central octagonal panel found early in May 1881 in what was then Mrs Prosser's garden (later bought by Messrs Mumford and built over) on the E side of Head Street. Photo in source 1. H Laver noted that the pavement was over c.5ft deep and resting on it were the remains of walls of the house with brightly coloured plaster lining. The house was probably destroyed by fire. The pavement is c.18 x 15ft of small tesserae surrounded by a border 5.5ft wide of red tesserae. Position of the pavement on Hull's map is taken from Cuutts' plan. <1> Other refs. <2> <3> <4>
