Full Description

Tessellated pavement found about 1871 in the garden of St Mary's Cottage. It was taken up and relaid in the veranda of the house. Site marked on the OS 1:500 map and Cutts' plan. <1> <2> Other refs. <3> <4> Digging in this garden in June 1922 by Mr May of which PG Laver took notes and a sketch-plan. The NW angle of a building was found, said to be `some 30ft from the town wall' although the sketch plan shows distance of c.60ft. It lay due S of the pavement described above. Wall was 12" thick, the depth not ascertained, depth from the surface 3.5ft. The N-S arm was parallel to the town wall. The sketch-plan shows two pavements - one (that noted above) against the N wall of the garden. This Mr May stated was that recorded as being found in Mr Unwin's garden and now in the Museum (note in source 1 adds that it is not known in the Museum). The other lies immediately W of the projection on the SW face of the house and is said to be similar to the other and still there. <1> <4> Another pavement is marked on the OS 25" map 70ft W of the pavement found in 1871 with no information. The 1:500 map marls bronze coins only at this point - Hull believs there may be an error on the 25" map. <1> Other ref. <5>
