Full Description
Entry in Wire's diary notes remains of a brick kiln found opposite the depository of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge and some distance up Queen Street. Part of a mill or quern stone of lave was also found. Wire suggested a Medieval date. H Laver also noted the above; "may we have here the remains of a Norman brickyard or kiln?". - deposit of red burnt earth intermixed wiuth fragments of Roman roof tiles and numerous bricks. The deposit noted by PG Laver when the sewer was cut along the middle of Culver Street 1922, 4.6ft thick and containing many large pieces of brick like material. Hull also observed some of this deposit E of All Saints Church "and it exactly resembles the blocks of burnt clay used to build the central supports of the potters kilns". <1>
