Full Description

In 1933 Messrs Sainsbury made alterations in the garden second west from the Red Lion. A foundation trench cut along the E side of the extension revealed the foundations of 3 Roman walls. The first, 3ft from the surface, was 2ft from the building line of Culver Street and 1ft wide. 9ft N of it lay another 2ft thick. The third, 19ft N of the second was 1ft thick All ran E-W, approximately parallel to Culver Street, the spaces between them had been floored with clay. Observed by Mr EJ Rudsdale. <1> During alteration to the present premises of Marks and Spencer remains of a decorated mosaic pavement were observed under the E boundary of the site (Feb 1936). There was possibly another pavement running under Sainsburys. <1>
