Full Description

In 1857 a very fine piece of pavement was found c.2ft underground in the Red Lion Yard whilst making a drain. The ornamental part was about 25ft square. Attempts to persuade the proprieter to allow it to be taken up failed and the drain was cut through it. Drawing by J PArish in the Museum, photo in source 1; "there is no doubt that the artist is untrustworthy" - ?accuracy of the depiction. <1> <2> Just S of this in 1882 part of a decorated mosaic pavement was found, apparently in the actual back entrance to the hotel yard from Culver Street. Drawing of it with measured plan of its position by F Evelyn Morris is in the Museum (photo in source 1). The fragment if preserved in the lounge of the hotel. <1> <3> Other ref. <4> The above refers to Hull's site 68. Further sites marked at the Red Lion Hotel by Hull on the map in source 1; site 180 - "labourers laying a drain in the Red Lion Yard found a pavement of small white tesserae. Also Hull's site 181 - In February 1937 the E side of the Red Lion Yard was converted into a large lounge. The trench for the now W wall revealed an ordinary red pavement at a depth of 3ft near the N end; it could be the margin of one of those described above. <1> Other refs. <5> <6> <7>
