Full Description

Note in Wire's Diary states that another decorated pavement was found on the S side of the Red Lion Inn when part of it was converted into an iron warehouse. A great quantity of the pieces were preserved and set in an arbour in one of the gardens belonging to the inn. This has long disappeared. <1> <2> Other ref. <3> J Roman Stud, Vol 9, p166, assumes this is the same as the black and white pavement noted by Wire "a pavement composed of black and white tesserae ... running E-W across the yard of the Red Lion ..... Morant mentions a pavement of this sort being discovered on these premises". The position is halfway between High Street and Culver Street - Wire's map in `County Illustrations'. <1> <2> <4> <5> Other ref. <6>
