Full Description
Cutting of a water main along Culver Street from Head Street 1936. Opposite the corner with Bank Passage a red tessellated pavement was struck which extended for 25ft E wards. Jut W of it stood a pottery vessel with shattered lid, and just E of it the sides of a doorway in tiles. 'Noted by Mr EJ Rudsdale who also observed slight traces of a gravelled surface opposite the back gate of Barclays Bank, and adjoining it to the E another red tessellated pavement 10ft wide'. Also observed was the broken (?)end of a Roman wall of tiles, also very broken remains of septaria walling which Laver suggested to be the W wall of the room containing the black and white pavement (13014). Farther on (?to E) a wall of massive blocks of septaria was cut through exactly opposite the centre of Lay and Wheelers building, and just beyond this there was a platform of several courses of tile laid flat, in good mortar at at depth of 3ft from the street. It began exactly opposite the SE cornr of Lay and Wheelers and extended for 16ft to a point opposite the E side of the passage on the E of the same building. 3ft from the passageway another wall of septaria crossed the trench. <1>
