Full Description

Walls and pavements under the ramparts of the castle bailey found i 1842, 1892, etc. Under the earthwork around the N end of the castle area run 2 parallel walls, c.2ft thick, on a rectangular plan. The width of enclosure thus formed is c.390ft. On the N side near the NW corner the walls are c.40ft apart (in general 25ft) and the space between is therefore increased. The space is partially paved with blue lias slabs. The walls have been identified with much probability with the northern art of the forum of the Roman town. <1> "The walls had been noticed in Morant's time (1748) and Jenkins published a sketch plan in 1861, but the first excavation was undertaken by the Rev JT Round in whose garden they then laty, in 1845". Accounts of this excavation given by Wire and C Roach Smith (source 4). Wire, 10-1-1845, noted trenches being dug through "the hill west side of the bailey" and on the north side of the castle immediately under the well. Roach Smith notes that `Round dug to ascertain the nature of the wall under the rampart'. In 1892 path was made through these walls at the NW corner and Dr H Laver published an account of them. Two parallel walls were found, the outer of which seems to give the NW corner of the insula. The outer wall runs S from the NW angle under the W rampart of the castle - it was described as 2'4" thick with a rubble core and facing of squared septaria. The inner wall was also 2ft thick of similar construction. On the W side between the walls Laver found 2 red concrete floors. On them were inhumation burials - probably early Saxon. Further S the plan is conjectural "and it is still uncertain which of the two walls will line in with the structures found under the W pavement of Museum Street". <2> <3> <4> <5>
