Full Description

Demolition of some of Norfolk's houses 1931 made a space accessible almost opposite the centre of the S face of the castle - on the line of the southern Norman rampart. Almost immediately under the surface were located masses of pink mortar and masonry. The section indicates that this was the summit of remains which had proved too difficult to demolish completely - the Normans had piled the gravel of the rampart over them. The upper part of the masonry ran N-S, faced on the W side. Still 5-6ft thick and 6ft high. The W face consisted mostly of small squared blocks of tufa, c.9x3" on the face. 8ft from the N face a wall returned westwards, at least 5ft thick. S of this wall the W face of the first wall continued, but now entirely of the small blocks of tuaf with occasional pieces of tile. Most noticeable in it is the bold course of large blocks of basalt - above and below are courses of tile and tufa in no very regular order. Determined efforts have been made to undermine or fell this masonry from every direction - causing much damage. A great deal remains below this level where there is nearly another 5ft of solid masonry. The S face (plate in this source) was uncovered and showed 6 courses of squared septaria, very carefully built. There was an offset of 9" at the original ground level, below which were three more rough courses and a foot of concrete foundation. On the N side the foundation had no finished face. Core of upstanding masonry was a roughly coursed rubble concrete. Demolition of the adjoining house to the E permitted tracing of the foundation in that direction - it continued across the site and under the next premises. <1>
