Full Description

When the old premises of Messrs Paull's (east corner of George Street) were taken down a cellar was made and 3 walls running parallel to High Street were uncovered. One, 2ft from the boundary was 2ft thick and ran from George Street to halfway across the property, where it broke off. North of this lay the foundation of a tessellated pavement extending for 18ft from George Street and 19ft N-S from the first wall to the second. The 2nd and 3rd walls formed a passage, parallel to High Street and only 2.5ft wide. The walls were only 1ft thick. The foundation for the pavement was over 1ft thick in front but thinner at the back, the middle portion seems to have been burnt. <1>
