Full Description

The owner of King Coel's Kitchen invited Philip Crummy to direct a JCB in the digging of some trial trenches to establish the nature of the kitchen. Several long trenches were dug in the bottom and side of the site. From the outset of the work it was clear that the kitchen is a former gravel pit. At the bottom of the pit a thin layer of topsoil overlies layers of gravel. There were no intervening layers of any deposits which could be interpreted as floors, occupation or make-up. The gravel in places consisted of stones of unusually large size. This appeared to been the result of grading gravel and were large rejects redeposited in pockets or small holes in the base of the pit. The sides exhibited the same sequence as the bottom, again with no hint of any significant archaeological layers. Nothing was found to date the pit.<2>
