Full Description

There are the remains of a timber wharf on the north bank of the Roman River, near its junction with the River Colne. Part of a narrow gauge railway originally served the sand and gravel quarry (now disused) to the north-west and was where sand and gravel was loaded on to barges in the 19th and 20th centuries. The river is tidal at this point. The remains consisted of large horizontal timbers with a mortice and peg-hole joint at the ends and immediately below and in line with these timbers are stakes. The horizontal timbers would have been boarded over to form a platform of which no trace has survived. <2>
