Full Description

Workmen engaged in cutting a pipe trench reported a find of two Roman cremation urns under the pavement adjacent to numbers 15 to 17, The Avenue and a bungalow then under construction. The site was visited and the finds collected. The finds spot was noted and part of the north face of the trench sketched. There were two aparent layers: a brown sandy loam topsoil about 0.5m deep which gradually merged with the underlying reddish brown stony sand exposed to a depth of 0.4m (probably natural). The pots lay in the sandy loam about 0.45m from present ground level. According to the workmen the pots were removed from the centre of the 0.7m wide trench although there was no discernible cut in the section. <2>
