Full Description

Trench for a gas main cut in 1927 along the N pavement of High Street cut through a series of Roman walls (plan in this source). At the junction of the Lamb Hotel and the Hippodrome a brick and rubble wall, 2ft thick was found 18" below the pavement. Similar walls were found opposite the boundary of No 132 and the Hippodrome Cafe, between Nos 132 and 133 and between Nos 133 and 134. That between 132 and 133 was 2.5ft thick, built of brick and septaria slabs about 18" long. There was no wall at the entrance to the Angel yard but a mass of brick and clay about 8ft wide was found. No stratified finds except for an antoninianus of Gallienus said to have been found under one of the walls. The few coins were mostly illegible but included a small Urbs Roma. The pottery was negligible. <1> <2>
