Full Description

Mosaic pavement and foundations found close to 18 (=12488). Entry in Wire's diary 23-5-1844 records his receipt of a small piece of tessellated pavement being the "remains of a beautiful one discovered in the gardeners market some years since". Wheeler and Laver refer this to the western of the two marks on the OS map "presumably on the authority of Cutts". Entry in Wire's Diary 9-5-1856 notes finds made during a visit to the vegetable market "a great quantity of septaria, mortar, fragments of Roman roof tiles, bricks and oyster shells have been come upon to the depth of nine feet". The followinf day "a foundation of septaria and loose mortar" was found, c.5ft square finds included a coin of Germanicus. <1> Other refs. <2> <3> <4>
