Full Description
In Dec 1849 a tessellated pavement was found during the rebuilding of the `Peoples' Hall (the site now of St George's Hall) adjoining the Corn Exchange. An entry in Wire's Diary notes; "it was discovered on the east side (of the site) ... where the foundation is at the SE curve about 8ft below the surface. It was broken up, as only a portion of it was discovered, the remainder being under the building occupied by the Mechanic's Istitution". It had a chequered pattern. <1> An original drawing (photo in source 1) by Mr A Tibbenham of Ipswich is in the Museum. <2> <3> Other ref. <4>
