Full Description

Small excavation in the garden of 60 North Hill in 1945. The work was done by GH Martin and IM Sparrow of the Royal Grammar School. Red pavement under the house (12483) marked by Wire. Remains of a decorated mosaic were found at a depth of 1ft. The eastermost trench (I) revealed a small piece of a N-S wall, of dressed septaria laid in yellowish sandy mortar - which presumably belonged to the other building remains that included the decorated pavement. Further N-S wall found c.23ft to the W - it was well preserved where it had bounded the E side of the pavement. The most part of the mosaic centre had been destroyed; at some time a gap in the NE corner of the pavement had been repaired with cobbling of large pebbles that continued for over 8ft E from it. The sequence of building concluded from excavation is of a clay walled building that are the earliest on the site. The walls are c.3ft thick, and mounds of clay from these still lie about. These early buildings or a subsequent series built of clay vlocks ended in conflagration - probably connected with the events of AD61. The stone built house followed probably in the C2 - it was not built until the burnt layer had consolidated. The subsequent history is not known as upper layers are missing. <1> Other ref. <2>
