Full Description
Entry from Wire's diary 18.6.1852 notes a metal fibula purchased, plated with silver, a plain bronze ring, a second fibula, coin of Vespasian, terra sigillata base and several plain fragments of samian. "At the lower part of the Botanic garden opposite Lot xi, a layer of wood ashes was discovered c.30" below the surface, which continued 10ft then an intermission of a few feet, then a commencement of it for four feet". Some short distance E of it was a floor of flaagstones c.6ft square and further to the E opposite Lot vi at 3ft below the surface was a floor of Roman tiles of unusual size continued by a path made with septaria and good sized pebbles. This extended the full width of the sewer trench but extent to either side could not be ascertained. <1> <2> in TEAS it is stated that these renains were a little north of Hull's site 40 (12338). <3> Other ref. <4>
