Full Description

Excavation in advance of redevelopment as a police station was continued on the late Roman cemetery. A further 42 inhumation butrials were excavated beneath the N end of Denmark Street. These graves almost exclusively had nailed wooden coffins, and all except one were orientated with the feet to the E. Grave goods continued to be sparse, but included several pottery vessels, shale and copper alloy bracelets, and hobnails. The burials were probably all of C4 date. The apse of the cemetery ?church was relocated and the area immediately to the E was found to be free of burials. A watching brief is continuing during building operations. Two more graves have been excavated, taking the total for the project to 741. <1>
