Full Description
Roman cemetery largely destroyed by gravel and sand quarrying in the mid C19. Wire left copious and detailed notes (now in Colchester Museum). The various modes of burial included cremations within and without urns inhumations in wooden coffins (nails and fitments survived as evidence); two lead coffin burials; a strange `circulr cist' full of urns; a tile tomb; and a tomb `constructed after the manner of the town walls'. The boundary of the part of the cemetery recovered seemed to be level with Butt wind mill to the S, Burlington Road to the N; and Maldon Road to the W. To the E it merges with outliers from Abbey Field cemetery (see ).<1> - <8> Nearly all the burials were inhumations, some in lead or stone coffins. The cemetery was used extensively in the latest Roman period. Photo of lead coffin decorated with scallop shells in this source. <7> <8> Remains of a Saxon cemetery were also found (see ). Among the finds drawn by Wire were two spearheads, one of which is dated to the late C4 or early C5, the other mid C5-early C6. A bronze buckle was found in 1844 and is similar to one from the Mersea Road cemetery dated to the late C4. <9>
