Full Description
Roman cemetery possibly continuous with the Butt Road cemetery to the W (see ). Numerous cremations were found during the construction of the barracks in the late C19 extending into the area levelled for a football field in Abbey Road. Concentrations of urns were found near the Artillery Folly. From there there is a scatter as far as the town walls. The E and W boundaries have not been determined. To the S, few burials have been found in Abbey Field itself, but these include some inhumations (see also TL92-161 and 162, ). Plotting of individual burials on Abbey Field is difficult due to a lack of precise provenances. The area adjacent to the walls seems to have been used as a Roman refuse tip, as at Union Field (see TL92-049, ), with a build up of soil containing pottery, animal bones, oyster shells, with a great abundance of samian but few C4 coins.
