Full Description

In 1849 a Roman wall was found, running N-S, at the S corner of North Hill and St Pete's Street. The top was 27", the bottom over 76" below the surface of the street. The thickness was 2ft and the materials stone and tile. From its position just outside the town wall Hull suggested that it was a retaining wall for a causeway leading to the bridge over the Colne (see ). However made earth on the W side seemed not to support such a theory. The function of "this wall just here is puzzling for the position is only 75ft N of the town wall and would scarcely be clear of berm and ditch". <1> <2> Note this entry was duplicated under 13131; this entry is now deleted.
