Full Description

Roman house or group of houses north of the river. A tessellated pavement was found in 1880 at the back of the inn during digging for foundations. The full extent could not be ascertained. Some of the tesserae were of Purbeck marble. Red tessellated pavements have been noted running under the houses as far as the middle of the present North Station Road. Some were exposed when the pavement on the W side of the street was laid (before 1909) Part of another pavement was found in 1927 with a geometric design in black and white, also a foundation of rubble and cement. PG Laver noted some further observations in his diary. In 1929 a Roman wall was cut through by a water main in North Station Road, opposite No 27. Very few potsherds were found. Nearer North Bridge nothing was found except possibly part of a gravel road in the ford of earlier Roman times. Opposite the lane by the Victoria Inn the trench cut through another wall diagonally. This was observed by Hull in 1952. Laver recalled that the Roman pavement had been found under the modern path and street opposite the Victoria Inn (also found again in 1952). In 1932 Laver noted a Roman wall running E-W under the W half of the street. His sketch shows the wall first S of the Victoria Inn. <1> - <8>
