Full Description

Part of the monastic cemetery was excavated where it overlay a Saxon church. Part of the boundary wall of the Abbey was found to be Norman, probably refaced in the C16. <1> <2> <3> Archaeology and documentary sources agree in that this part of the Abbey grounds was the site of large scale dumping of soil in the C12. This was probably done to create a terrace for the new monastic buildings. <4>
