Behind the Waterworks House at the bottom of Balkerne Hill are 2 reservoirs. One at least was under construction in 1808. The `Morning Chronicle' records the discovery of a Roman bath house, with earthen pipes for letting in and out of water. The Chronicle also records the discovery of a Roman pavement over some outer framing, almost perfectly sound. Pottery included Samian. Coins were mostly Claudius. Trajan, Antoninu Pius and some illegible due to corrosion. Also found were * instruments used in their * . Hull comments "if ever one should have to conclude that the public baths must have been outside the walls, this is a very possible spot. It could easily be well supplied with water>" <1> <2> <3> See also PRNs 12350, 12353. Was duplicated as 13217, this is now deleted.
