Full Description

A problematic site. Excavated in 1955 it is more likely that the Balkerne Gardens is meant than St Mary's Rectory. It is uncertain whether the unlabelled plan belongs to this site. No notes survive. The likelihood is that the plan is associated. The pottery is all unstratified but forms an interesting group. Apart from a small amount of late Saxon, mostly the material is late C1. The composition and large sherd size suggests one or more pit groups were disturbed. The samian is mostly Neronian South Gaulish. Other pottery includes early? Colchester rough cast beakers, amphora sherds, mortaria and early grey wares. In addition a lathe-turned bone cylinder and an iron object, apparently a square sectioned spike tapering at both ends and probably a file or similar tool. <1>
