Full Description

A red tessellated pavement was found in the field behind the castle in 1892. It was about 18ft square (see source 2). Another note on this ascribes the discovery to the laying out of the Castle Park and states that part was covered by a glass roof and a large part was buried (see source 3). The glass-covered part was since damaged by frost and reburied. The pavement lies in the SW angle of Insula 6. To the E 3 houses were excavated in the early part of this century (see 12303). As part of this work a trench was cut W from the pavement to the garden fence, also a narrow tessellated strip like that of a corridor W of it, and beyond this the street. <1> <4>
