Full Description
Late C12-early C13 kiln site excavated in advance of the diversion of Mile End - Nayland Road during the Colchester Northern by-pass scheme.<1> Excavation revealed four large pits, several postholes and gullies to the north of the excavated area and boundary ditches. In the first phase of the site the majority of the vessels produced were cooking pots with curved everted rims but jugs and bowls were also manufactured. In phase 2 the products were bowls and cooking pots with flat topped rim. Some pieces of pottery made elsewhere were also found and 6 fragments of chimney pot. The evidence of wasters at Mile End points to these pots as products of kilns in this vicinity. Several fragments of kiln furniture were also recovered. Small finds include a knife blade and square headed nail.<2> APs of the site and photos of the excavation in SMR.<3><4>
Site Assessment = Partially excavated in advance of development.<1>
